As-salam, fortunately I stumbled upon this FB post by Singaporean playwright, Alfian Sa'at, yesterday. The natural reaction would be to imagine "what could have been, what might been" had Tunku not kicked Singapore out of Malaysia in 1965.
Incidentally too, the conversation at the end of today's afternoon soiree was about "what might have been" if Malaya had achieved Independence at the same time as Indonesia in 1945. If Mustapha Hussain had secured ONE more vote to be UMNO's President and Malaya's first Prime Minister.
Now, 'unity' seems to be the last thing on some politicians' agenda. What with the wide divide among the Malay political parties and the call for Sabah and Sarawak to be out of Malaysia. Sigh.
Alfian Sa'at A song commissioned by the Singapore Ministry of Culture to commemorate Singapore's merger into the Federation of Malaysia.
'Divided Land'
Performed by Julie Sudiro and Ahmad Daud
There is a land divided by the sea
Waiting for unity
There is a land in our hearts so dear
That's our land of Malaysia
There is a land divided by history
Longing for unity
There is a land full of prosperity
That's Malaysia our new country
Let's build a bridge and span the sea
To join Malaysia
Let's work for life so full of harmony
In our future Malaysia
There is a land divided by the sea
Waiting for unity
There is a land in our hearts so dear
That's our land of Malaysia
There is a land divided by history
Longing for unity
There is a land full of prosperity
That's Malaysia our new country
Let's build a bridge and span the sea
To join Malaysia
Let's work for life so full of harmony
In our future Malaysia
Let's work for life so full of harmony
In our future Malaysia.
